The Armour-Stiner Octagon House, a National Historic Landmark in Irvington, New York, is seeking a Part-Time Administrative & Tour Associate to join our team. This position combines administrative support with the opportunity to lead guided tours of this remarkable architectural landmark.The position is open immediately and will continue through the end of December, with the possibility of limited hours during the winter months when the house is closed to regular tours. The role may include up to 30 hours or more per week, depending on seasonal needs.Tours typically operate Thursday through Monday, and the house is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Because weekends are the busiest and most important time for tours, weekend availability is required. Candidates must be available to work Saturdays and Sundays on a regular basis. Applicants who cannot work weekends will not be considered.The New York Times described the tour experience at the Armour-Stiner Octagon House as “absolutely delightful and inspiring.” Guided tours take place on the 3.3-acre property and include both the interior and exterior of this extraordinary historic home. The successful candidate will join a small and enthusiastic team dedicated to sharing the stories of this unique house museum with visitors from around the world.QUALIFICATIONSBA or advanced degree preferred. Emphasis in Architecture, Art History, Historic Preservation, Museum Studies, or related fields preferred but not required.Knowledge of and enthusiasm for nineteenth-century American history, art, architecture, or design.Strong organizational and administrative skills, including attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks.Outstanding verbal communication and presentation skills for audiences of diverse ages and levels of knowledge.Flexibility with schedule and hours, including the ability to work weekends and holidays.Enjoy working with the public and presenting in an engaging and comfortable manner to small groups.Interest or experience in leading interactive or interpretive tours.Ability to stand for periods up to 120 minutes and lift loads of up to 20 pounds without assistance.Applicants must have a valid driver’s license or government-issued ID.Applicants must speak and read English fluently. Additional languages desirable.DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIESProvide administrative support for the daily operations of the Armour-Stiner Octagon House, including guest correspondence, scheduling assistance, and organizational tasks as needed.Assist with tour reservations, guest check-in, and visitor coordination.Accurately interpret the architecture, landscape, artifacts, and collections of the Armour-Stiner Octagon House through guided tours that encourage visitors to better understand and appreciate architecture, design, and art in the second half of the nineteenth century.Conduct one-hour guided house tours for groups of up to 20 visitors.Create a welcoming and hospitable atmosphere when greeting and checking in guests.Process gift shop and ticket transactions using a tablet-based point-of-sale system.On occasion assist with tours outside the regular tour schedule, including special events or group visits.Maintain punctuality, accountability, and reliability in all work responsibilities.Maintain an attitude of flexibility and professionalism in all peer and staff interactions.Dress in business casual attire while working (no jeans, athletic wear, clothing with large logos, or anything distressed or revealing).Adhere to and enforce house rules to safeguard the house, its collections, and guests.Perform other duties as assigned.
