Laura Owens Studio is seeking a Lead Fine Art Printer to lead the studio’s print production team and serve as the primary bridge between the production floor and the Production Manager.The Lead Printer will oversee day-to-day print production, coordinate the print team, and ensure projects are executed efficiently and to the highest standards. They will translate direction from the Production Manager and artist into clear priorities for the team, while communicating production progress, staffing needs, technical issues, materials, and potential delays back to the Production Manager. They will also work closely with the Production Manager who is also a highly skilled printer.The primary technique used in the studio is screen printing, with relief, hybrid, and experimental processes also incorporated.The ideal candidate is an experienced printer who is detail-oriented, reliable, organized, collaborative, and capable of leading a team while taking direction and exercising sound judgment. Dependable transportation is required. The position may require occasional evening and weekend work to meet project deadlines.ResponsibilitiesLead the day-to-day operations of the print floor and coordinate the print team.Serve as the primary communication link between the production floor and Production Manager.Communicate project status, priorities, staffing needs, materials, technical issues, and potential delays to the Production Manager.Translate direction from the Production Manager and artist into clear tasks and priorities for the print team.Identify and troubleshoot technical and production issues and escalate as needed.Oversee screen preparation, coating, reclaiming, exposing, registration, and printing.Mix and match paints and inks and conduct color testing to meet artist specifications.Monitor print quality, color accuracy, registration, and overall execution.Assist with relief, hybrid, and experimental print processes.Maintain, inventory and organize printing equipment, materials, and work areas.Train, oversee and support printers and print assistants, helping to maintain a collaborative, professional work environment.Document and relay project information for the artist’s archive.QualificationsSignificant professional experience in fine art printing; experience with screen printing is advantageous.Experience with large-scale or complex print production.Strong technical knowledge of screen printing and color matching.Previous experience leading, training, or supervising printers or studio staff.Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.Ability to take direction while exercising independent judgment on the production floor.High level of attention to detail and craftsmanship.Dependable transportation and flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends.
