Gallery Assistant & Bookstore Associate Petzel is a contemporary art gallery based in New York with an eclectic program of international artists, all of whom are critically acclaimed for their distinct creative processes. Petzel operates out of the heart of Chelsea at 25th Street. Overview Reporting to the Gallery Manager, the Gallery Assistant & Bookstore Associate, plays a central, cross-functional role in supporting the gallery’s operational infrastructure, client engagement, and public programming—including a strong emphasis on the on-site and online bookstore. Core Responsibilities Gallery Operations & Administrative Serve as a primary point of contact for visitors, ensuring a welcoming and professional environment Oversee front desk operations, including opening and closing procedures Manage general communications (phone, email, inquiries) Maintain database systems and internal tracking documents Oversee gallery presentation, ensuring all public-facing spaces meet highest standards Lead the planning and execution of on-site and off-site events in support of exhibition openings Track and order office, operational, and event-related supplies Provide cross-departmental administrative support Bookstore, Retail & Ecommerce Oversee daily operations of the gallery bookstore, both onsite and via ecommerce platforms Manage online sales channels, ensuring accurate product listings, pricing, inventory, and fulfillment Monitor and optimize ecommerce performance, including user experience and sales conversion Coordinate shipping, order processing, and distribution logistics for publications and merchandise Develop and execute retail strategies aligned with gallery programming and revenue goals Manage bookstore inventory, merchandising, and in-gallery retail presentation Partner with communications team on digital marketing initiatives supporting ecommerce sales Manage bookstore-related social media and online audience engagement Required Qualifications 3–5 years of experience in a commercial gallery, arts organization, or related field Experience with ecommerce platforms and in-person retail operations Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite Excellent written and verbal communication skills Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to manage multiple high-priority projects simultaneously Professional, polished presence with strong client-facing experience Preferred Skills Experience with Artlogic or similar CRM/database systems Familiarity with contemporary art and gallery operations Proficiency in a foreign language Schedule Tuesday to Saturday, 9:45am to 6:00pm (Monday to Friday in the Summer Months)Occasional evening and weekend work required for exhibition openings and other gallery-related events
