Alexander Gray Associates is seeking a full-time Assistant Preparator working in all aspects of art handling, installation, and assisting with facilities maintenance. The Assistant Preparator will work alongside the Senior Preparator and in collaboration with Operations, Registrar, Sales, and Artist Management teams to facilitate all safe handling of Gallery inventory. This role is at the forefront of caring for the artworks and, by extension, Gallery artists and clients.BIPOC candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.ResponsibilitiesInstalling artwork for client viewings, exhibitions, photography, events, and local art fairs.Preparing artworks for shipments, packing/unpacking, and receiving/releasing.Maintaining and organizing Preparator supplies inventory, display materials, and events equipment.Uploading and organizing shipping receipts.Assisting with hand deliveries and collections to/from Gallery, artist studios, and client residences.Maintaining general upkeep of Gallery physical appearance.Assisting with art fair preparations and event set up.Assisting with inventory and storage management.RequirementsBA required, with primary study in one of the following areas: Art History, Museum Studies, Arts Administration, or Fine Arts.Minimum 1 years work experience in a professional art handling or preparator capacity at an art gallery, fine art shipping company, auction house, or related organization. Candidates without professional art handling experience will not be considered.Knowledge of software including: Microsoft Office, Monday, and Artlogic or other artwork database systems.Familiarity with basic tools, light carpentry (crate fabrication experience a plus).Knowledge of art handling best practices.Experience with fine art packing techniques.Valid drivers license and experience driving a box truck in New York City preferred.Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.Work hours are in-person Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm.Ideal candidates will be aligned with the Gallery’s culture and mission.
