Assigned to Kean University, and reporting to the Executive Director, the Temporary Docent Supervisor supervises docents supporting daily gallery visitation, tours, and arts programming events for the Kean University community and external audiences. The Docent Supervisor supervises the recruitment, training, daily supervision, and performance review of all docents, and steps in to fulfill docent duties as necessary. The Supervisor will work with the Director of Educational Programs and Community Engagement to ensure a seamless tour experience for internal and external groups. As an essential member of the operations team, they ensure the seamless and accurate capture of data from ticketing and admission through reporting and accounting. They will attend campus meetings as well as internal and external partnership meetings with or on behalf of galleries and collections staff, and perform other duties as assigned. This position requires a flexible schedule with occasional evening or weekend hours for events as needed.Examples of Work Work continually with docents to improve touring skills and cultivate familiarity in all aspects of Galleries and Collections, following established policies and procedures for conduct and performance. Conduct regular check-ins and mock tours to evaluate docent performance. Serve as primary point of contact for student scheduling using the WhenIWork platform. Provide training that assures tours align with content standards and encourage docents to enhance their touring skills, increase their knowledge of exhibitions and the collection, remain current on best practices in museum education, and understand the needs and interests of teachers, students, and museum visitors. Ensure accurate collection and reporting of daily visitation and donations and compile reports. Troubleshoot issues with docents and visitors related to Navigate360 and VBO platforms. Supervise docents’ additional duties including content creation for social media platforms and web publishing, and creating and distributing promotional material. Coordinates approval with appropriate Galleries and Collections staff before content is published, providing docents with feedback and correction as needed. Supervise docents and represent Galleries and Collections at events and university and public gatherings. Promote the Galleries’ offerings and engage with stakeholders, providing information and encouraging participation. Serve as primary docent and tour liaison to Galleries and Collections staff, providing follow-up and coordinating support for all activities, including operations, marketing, events, evaluation, special collections and archives, and exhibitions. Review and follow up on group tour evaluations and feedback, including any necessary disciplinary actions. Recruit applicants and field docent program inquiries; review applications and interview candidates. Collaborate with staff on exhibits, school programs, and public events. Consults with the supervisor(s) concerning assignments and problem solving. Participates in data collection and reporting for the assessment process. Attends and participates in meetings and/or events related to assigned responsibilities. Represents Kean University at conferences, meetings, seminars and to the public with a professional demeanor always. Prepares correspondence and maintains essential files and records. Does related work as required.Requirements Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and at least one year of professional experience in higher education or related field is required. Experience supervising student employees. Excellent customer service, verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills. Experience leading art or history tours. Experience with POS, CMS, and ticketing platforms. Strong time management skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Team player with the ability to work with a variety of students, artists, and staff. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. This seasonal position is end-dated December 31, 2026. Compensation is $22 per hour.
