The first art gallery in New York\'s SoHo, Paula Cooper Gallery, opened in 1968 with an exhibition to benefit the Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam. The show featured works by Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Robert Mangold, and Robert Ryman, among others, as well as Sol LeWitt’s inaugural wall drawing. For five decades, the gallery’s artistic agenda has remained focused on, though not limited to, conceptual and minimal art.The gallery is currently seeking a full-time Art Handler. The ideal candidate will have excellent problem solving and time management skills, hard working, good communicator, follows instructions, and works well both on their own and with a team.Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:• Safe and proper handling and packing/unpacking of artwork. Must be able to lift 50lbs.• Prepare artwork for public & private client viewings including hanging art & preparing viewing space upon short notice.• Receive artwork and process paperwork for artwork received.• Responsible for maintaining gallery including painting/patching walls, cleaning of gallery space and surrounding areas, including sidewalks, bathrooms, and hallways.• Pack artwork, including building-out/modifying crates for shipment, making slipcases, shadow boxes, portfolios, and preparing artwork for shipment.• Organization of physical inventory.• Must be extremely diligent and careful in handling artwork.• Ability to work well under pressure in fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude and communicating well with others.• BA in Studio Art or Art History or related field preferred.• Additional duties as assigned and willing to work extra hours for gallery events and openings. Must be willing to go to gallery storages for inventory checks with registrars and when necessary for special projects.• Applicants should be organized and detail-oriented with strong oral and written communication skills. • Previous art handling experience with high value, museum quality artworks required.• Must have knowledge of various packing materials and current best method for packing and installing artworks of all media. Must work well with others and be able to follow instructions.• Keep Gallery, viewing rooms clean and tidy at all times.
