Jenkins Johnson Gallery is an established contemporary art gallery with spaces in New York and San Francisco. We are looking for a highly competent Gallery Associate to work as part of the New York team. The position will require in-person work at both our spaces in New York—one in Tribeca, one in Brooklyn near Prospect Park—with occasional off-site work including art fairs (such as Frieze New York) and at our storage space with UOVO in Bushwick. This would begin as a part-time position, approximately 3 days a week, paying hourly. We would prioritize candidates who are interested in full-time work and the position could evolve to full-time if the candidate is found suited. Core Competencies Administrative capacity, including strong organizational skills, communication capacity, and the ability to track and follow through on tasks.Attention to detail is an absolute must. Fine details in text and design must be tightly observed and followed through on.Sales experience, including the ability to identify and follow up on new leads; maintain and strengthen existing client relationships; and brainstorming how to connect existing clients to new work, and/or connect new clients to our extant program.Strong foundational knowledge in the history of contemporary art, and an active engagement with contemporary art discourse today. We expect candidates to know the contemporary art landscape including awareness of art fairs, auction houses, and press.Creative problem-solving skills suited to the unpredictability of contemporary art. Willingness to research and learn about new fields to problem-solve outside of expected core competencies.Writing and research skills required. We are looking for a candidate who is a confident writer capable of doing original research. Valued Attributes Experience with basic art handling, installation, and packing. As a corollary, experience with basic space prep including painting, patching, and sanding walls.Experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, video editing software, and/or Sketchup.Experience and knowledge with contemporary art fairs, including but not limited to the Art Basel and Frieze fairs.Experience with social media, newsletter software (Mailchimp), or other promotional tools.Event planning experience, both on-site (openings, performances, artist talks) and off-site (dinners, special events) with awareness around budgeting, deadlines, general promotion, and targeted outreach. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree requiredExisting experience working in a contemporary art gallery, institution, or in the contemporary art field in some capacity. 1 year experience minimumCompetency in basic office software, and general professional skills required.
