About us:Sandy Smith Studio is a fine art fabrication studio based in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Established in 2013, we make sculptures, installations, and bespoke framing/display solutions for artists, galleries and museums. We work in a wide variety of media including wood, metals, casting and plastics, and using both traditional tools and digital processes. We work directly with artists and galleries/institutions, and guide projects through from initial concept to finished installation. Who we are looking for:Our studio makes innovative artwork that goes to some of the leading galleries and museums in NYC, and our team is comprised of people with talent, a wide range of knowledge and experience, and a desire to continually improve and learn while working at the highest level.We are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic woodworker/maker to join our small team of four in our 4500 sq ft studio. This is a regular position of 4 or 5 days/week (candidates choice) and we are looking to hire someone to work with us on a long-term basis. Candidates must have 5+ years experience in professional shops or studios (outwith education), and should have knowledge of and interest in working in contemporary art. Skills:The main focus of this role is woodworking. Prior experience and skill working with both sheet materials and hardwood is essential and experience working with a wide range of tools and processes is crucial. You should be familiar with the concepts and processes of fine furniture (mortise/tenon joinery etc) and temporary display (MDF pedestals etc) as well as rough carpentry (wall framing etc). Attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and keen focus are all important qualities in what we do, as is the ability to safely and carefully lift and move fragile or delicate items, around 50lbs. Experience / knowledge of contemporary art fabrication is definitely helpful but not essential.You’ll be expected to work as part of the team on larger projects, but also be able to self-manage on smaller one-person projects.While this role is specifically focused on woodwork, we do work in a wide variety of media, so any experience in one or more of the following areas would be beneficial to your application:Metalwork (steel and/or aluminum cutting & welding)Painting & wood finishingFine art framingGeneral art handling / packing / wrappingCasting / mold makingNote, we are absolutely not expecting anyone to have all of these skills. We work in a wide variety of media and processes, and so we aim to foster an open, supportive working environment where you can bring your prior experience and knowledge, and also learn new skills.Where:You’ll be working from our studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn, although occasional on-site work installing projects around NYC is part of the role.Our hours are 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday.Pay:For a suitably qualified candidate the wage will be $35/hour ($72,800 salary) or commensurate with experience. Benefits:PTO is 3 weeks/year.
