A bespoke auction house in New York is looking for a Specialist to head up their Prints Department. The successful candidate will have knowledge of this subject matter from Old Masters through Modern Prints to be able to appraise, catalogue and write about the material, as well as cultivate relationships with potential sellers from which to source consignments, and buyers who could be interested in transacting with the house. They will build each biannual prints sale, as well as source prints consignments for other fine art auctions throughout the year, working directly with clients and answering any and all inquiries. This is a leadership position that will manage an administrator that supports the category. Previous professional experience in an auction house or gallery is a must.Responsibilities include: • Source desirable consignments from private collectors, estates, dealers, and other sources• Value and organize property for two/three sales each year • Contribute and review all cataloguing• Write condition reports and historical essays • Respond to consignment inquiries, write consignment proposals and negotiate sale terms• Lead the management of in-house inventory • Plan and lead sale exhibition • Maintain and develop a private and institutional client list and develop relationships• Opportunity to curate specialized sales and single-owner salesPrevious professional experience in art auction houses and/or galleries is a must. This role requires a detail-oriented, organized, and motivated individual with strong interpersonal skills and an appreciation for teamwork. The candidate must demonstrate constructive problem solving, excellent writing skills, quick follow-through, and the ability to manage various tasks in a hectic, fast-paced environment. A BA in a relevant field is required.
