The Trades Specialist (Locksmith) is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of locks, keys, and related door hardware. This includes creating and managing secure key systems, opening and repairing jammed locks, changing lock combinations, and fabricating keys or lock parts as needed. The position also involves maintaining detailed records of locks and key distribution, estimating materials, and occasionally performing related carpentry tasks. Working with minimal supervision, the locksmith may also supervise maintenance staff, ensuring the facility's security and safety standards are upheld.
Essential Functions
- Supervises and trains subordinate staff, e.g. Maintenance Assistant or Helper. Provides work assignments based on priorities set by management, ensuring schedules, standards and guidelines are met providing feedback for performance evaluations
- Manufactures keys
- Well versed in the small format interchangeable core key systems. Cutting keys, pinning up cores, and master key system
- Has working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the crafts to which assigned
- Provides estimates of time and materials for locks, keys, door hardware and similar
- Provides key and door hardware inventory control
- Reviews and approves project and capital plan proposals entailing locking mechanisms
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses electric door operators and sliding doors
- Repairs and installs electric strike
- May perform carpentry tasks related to lock and key systems, and door/window installation and repair
- Overtime will be required, sometimes on very short notice and on nights and weekends.
- Performs weekly vehicle checks to assure vehicles’ readiness. Checking and adding fluids, checking tire pressure and cleanliness
- Efficiently reads and interprets plans, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications
- Climbs, stoops, and does moderate to heavy lifting

Operating Needs
- Experience with Best Keystone 600 key management software computerized record keeping software and hardware
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to troubleshoot and repair various electronic card-access systems
- Computer literacy used to search web, prepare documentation and correspond with e-mail, Mach Forms
- Locksmith experience at a large institution such as a college campus
- Works both scheduled and unscheduled overtime as needed. Contact numbers must be available.
- Works well with diverse groups, as a team, with a positive customer service attitude
- Must be able to obtain Operations and Maintenance certification for asbestos removal
- Possess a valid New York State Driver License, Class D or above (other than a motorcycle license); this is verified through the NY State Department of Motor Vehicles. Must pass LENS check. This enables employees to pick up and deliver tools & equipment used in normal maintenance activities.
Minimum Qualifications:Non-competitive: four years of full-time experience in locksmithing under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in locksmithing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Work Schedule:40 hours/week: Monday - Friday 7:00am-3:30pm.
