Artforum, the magazine of record for the contemporary art industry, is hiring a Managing Editor. This role serves as a senior member of Artforum’s editorial staff, reporting directly to the co-editors and the publishers. The Managing Editor is responsible for scheduling and monitoring print and web workflows, as well as coordinating and tracking material from initial commissioning to final publication.Duties include overseeing the overall publication calendar, balancing individual editors’ workloads, helping to manage the editorial budget, scheduling editorial meetings, establishing editorial protocols, and maintaining shared editorial style guides and other resources.Additionally, the Managing Editor manages the editorial production staff (including the in-house Design and Photo directors and freelance editors, fact-checkers, and researchers) and oversees the processing of files for the print magazine, including the entering of corrections and hands-on finessing of galleys. The Managing Editor must be highly organized, decisive, meticulous, calm under pressure, a team leader, and comfortable enforcing deadlines for both staff and contributors. Artforum values in-person collaboration and team cohesion, and employees work onsite four days a week (Tuesday – Friday) with a focus on maintaining a vibrant and inclusive culture. The ideal candidate will have:Significant experience in an art-related fieldFive or more years of managerial experience, preferably in publishingHigh-level organizational and communication skillsAdvanced proficiency with InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat Pro, and Microsoft Word; other programs regularly used include Outlook, Zoom, Slack, and WordPress A good faith estimate of the salary is $90k upon hire.
