The Assistant Manager supports the overall leadership and daily operations of the dispensary, ensuring a consistent, compliant, and customer-focused experience. This role acts as the right hand to the Store Manager, maintaining operational excellence, supporting team development, and stepping into leadership coverage as needed.
The Assistant Manager plays a critical role in balancing tactical execution with strong leadership presence on the sales floor, driving results while upholding the company’s values and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Support the General Manager, Manager and Executive Management in overseeing aspects of store operations, including sales, inventory, customer service, and compliance
- Lead daily opening and closing procedures, ensuring readiness, security, and accurate cash handling
- Maintain consistent floor presence in overseeing staff performance, compliance adherence, and reinforce a strong customer service experience
- Act as the Manager-on-Duty when the Manager or General Manager is is unavailable, executing decisions that decrease liability and uphold Office of Cannabis Management compliance standards
Team Supervision and Development
- Supervise Sales Associates and Sales Leads, providing direction and real time feedback
- Model professional behavior and reinforce a culture of teamwork, reliability, and respect
- Support training and onboarding of new hires, ensuring new hires understand operational processes, compliance and customer engagement expectations
- Assist in scheduling and managing coverage to ensure adequate staffing during all business hours
Customer Experience
- Ensure all customers receive exceptional, compliant, and educational service
- Address escalated customer concerns or complaints in a calm, professional manner
- Foster a welcoming, knowledgeable environment that reflects the Company’s commitment to quality and care
- Monitor the sales floor to ensure the team is following consultative sales practices and company service standards
Compliance and Security
- Support adherence to all state and local cannabis regulations governing product sales, storage, and recordkeeping
- Monitor ID verification, transaction limits, and other compliance checkpoints to ensure accuracy and legality
- Participate in audits and inspections; promptly escalate and mitigate compliance issues
- Oversee store safety procedures, ensure staff are trained and incidents are properly documented
Inventory and Cash Management
- Support daily inventory counts, product intake, and reconciliation processes
- Ensure product handling, storage, and display meet regulatory and quality standards
- Participate in cash handling, register audits, and deposit verification to ensure financial accuracy
- Identify and report inventory or cash discrepancies
Sales and Performance
- Assist in driving daily, weekly, and monthly sales targets through coaching and on-the-floor engagement
- Track key performance metrics (sales per associate, conversion rate, average ticket, etc.) and identify improvement opportunities
- Support implementation of in-store promotions and product education initiatives to increase customer awareness and sales
Administrative and Reporting
- Assist in preparing daily operational and sales reports for management review
- Lead and audit employee timekeeping, attendance, and performance documentation meetings
- Maintain accurate records of training, compliance logs, and operational updates
- Participate in management meetings and contribute to store-level planning and improvement discussions
Work Environment
- Fast-paced retail setting requiring active floor leadership and engagement with staff and customers
- Must be comfortable handling cash, monitoring compliance activities, and addressing operational challenges in real time
- Flexibility required, including availability for evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed
- May include occasional travel for training, coverage, or Company meetings
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2–3 years of retail management or supervisory experience; cannabis retail experience strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of retail operations, compliance requirements, and customer service best practices
- Proven ability to lead a team, delegate effectively, and hold staff accountable
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to resolve conflicts and motivate staff
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency with POS systems, retail management software, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
