Buildings and Grounds Manager (part-time)
Catskill Animal Sanctuary is looking for a part-time Buildings and Grounds Manager to oversee the care and maintenance of our 100-acre property, its roads, barns, fencing, farm equipment, offices, buildings (including houses) and facilities. This is a critical role that helps ensure that the team can meet its mission each and every day.

CAS is one of the world’s leading teaching sanctuaries, located on approximately 100 acres in New York’s Hudson Valley. We are home to more than 140 rescued farmed animals across several different species. Our dedicated staff, together with many volunteers, welcome thousands of visitors each year through our tours, programs, and humane education initiatives.
What You’ll Do
Job Responsibilities:
- Maintain facilities and grounds across all Sanctuary properties, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and the maintenance of fences, roads, and vehicles
- Develop and maintains effective routines and procedures for the maintenance of all facets of a large operation
- Manage a routine fence check schedule to ensure no unnecessary injuries or escapes
- Maintain productivity and safety of pastures through routine seeding, removal of nuisance plants, brush hogging, and inspection for rodent holes
- Establish a maintenance schedule for all farm equipment: tractors, manure spreaders, dump trailers, brush hogs, farm trucks, and utility vehicles. Maintains vehicles in solid working order.
- Maintain roads, ditches, and culvert pipes: repair potholes, maintain condition and function of ditches and culverts by keeping them free of debris.
- Manage pest control with humane methods
- Effectively manage the buildings and grounds assistant, volunteers, and oversee work of seasonal groundskeepers
- Manage the buildings and grounds budget, meeting monthly with supervisor for review and adjustments as necessary
- Develop and execute a weather preparation protocol for each season to secure animals, staff, and shelters
- Develop relationships with local vendors: seek in-kind donations whenever appropriate and effectively secure the best deal possible for all purchases
- Keep garage and tool rooms organized and secure at all times
- Maintain Restroom Trailer, Port-a-Potty rentals and their 3rd party maintenance needs
- Create an evaluation checklist to ensure all buildings/systems are in good working order
- Schedule and complete annual Fire Extinguisher checks
- Assist with transport of animals when necessary
- Meet weekly with Shelter Director to review problem areas and prioritize improvements
- Help cultivate a great team environment
What You Bring
Job Requirements:
- Proven experience in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, fencing, and maintenance of roads, grounds, and vehicles
- Strong communications, organizational, and computer skills
- Team player and self-starter who enjoys physical work
- 3 to 5 years management experience in a similar role
- Experience operating farm tractors and other heavy equipment
- Ability to establish and follow routine maintenance procedures coupled with flexibility to respond effectively to emergencies
- Ability to establish own work priorities
- Live within 30 minutes of the sanctuary (for emergencies)
