Our eponymous flagship festival is held annually on June 21st — the summer solstice and longest day of the year — during which thousands of musicians, representing a wide variety of musical genres and cultural heritages, pour into plazas, streets, parks and community gardens, and sidewalks fronting local libraries and businesses, to play in hundreds of free concerts, transforming public gathering places into impromptu stages in the process. Our vision is to erase boundaries between performers and spectators, as well as amateur and professional practice, as we present free, diverse forms of musical expression to unite the communities of NYC in a daylong, celebratory music holiday. The festival has been hailed in the media as "Exhilarating... with prodigious displays and subtle experiences alike..." (The New York Times), "A sonic street party thrown on a totally outsize scale."
