JOB DESCRIPTIONThe Armour-Stiner Octagon House, a National Historic Landmark in Irvington, New York, is in search of qualified candidates to lead guided tours of this architectural jewel. This is a seasonal position starting on or about September 4 and continuing through January 4, 2026. Tours operate Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday; the house is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Seasonal guides must be available to work a minimum of two days, one of which must be Saturday or Sunday.The New York Times described the tour experience at The Armour-Stiner Octagon House as “absolutely delightful and inspiring.” All guided tours take place on the 3.3 acre site and include the interior and exterior of this one-of-a-kind historic home. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in 19th century American history, architecture, and/or art with prior experience guiding tours, teaching, or acting. Join our enthusiastic team of preservation-minded colleagues who enjoy sharing the stories of this unique house museum. QUALIFICATIONSBA or advanced degree is preferred. Emphasis in Architecture, Art History, Historic Preservation preferred but not required.Knowledge of and enthusiasm for nineteenth century American history, art, architecture, or design is essential.Outstanding verbal communication and presentation skills for diverse audience ages and levels of knowledge.Flexibility with schedule and hours, including ability to work weekends and holidays.Enjoy working with the public and present a comfortable and engaging demeanor in front of small groups of individuals.Interest or experience in leading interactive, non-traditional tours.Ability to stand for periods up to 120 minutes and lift loads of up to 20 pounds without assistance.Applicants must have a valid drivers\' license or government-issued ID.Applicants must speak and read English fluently. Additional languages desirable.DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIESAccurately interpret The Armour-Stiner Octagon House and its architecture, landscape, artifacts and collections through guided tours that encourage visitors to better understand and appreciate architecture, design and art in the second half of the nineteenth century.Conduct 1 hour guided house tours for up to 20 people.Punctuality, accountability, and reliability are key requirementsCreate a welcoming, hospitable atmosphere when greeting and checking in guests.Perform sale transactions of merchandise using a tablet-based point of sale system.On occasion assist with tours outside of the regular tour schedule.Maintain an attitude of flexibility and respect in all peer/staff relationships/interactions, including giving and receiving constructive feedback.Dress in business casual clothing when working - no jeans, athletic wear, clothing with large or obvious logos, or anything distressed, ripped, or revealing.Adhere to and enforce house rules to safeguard the house, its collections, and guests.Other duties as assigned.
