The Amherst College Department of Art and the History of Art seeks an artist to teach courses in painting, conceived as a practice informed by traditional methods that is in dialogue with contemporary and experimental approaches. We seek candidates who can teach painting at all levels, are engaged in contemporary art discourse, and interested in forging connections among painting, critical practices, and research methods. This is a two-year visiting position at the rank of visiting assistant professor, commencing on July 1, 2026. Responsibilities include teaching two courses per semester, advising majors and thesis work, and additional service to the life of the department. The successful candidate must hold an MFA or equivalent degree by the start of the appointment.
