Provincetown Independent Arts Writer The Provincetown Independent, an award-winning newspaper in one of the most culturally complex places in the United States, seeks an arts writer who shares our commitment to excellence in arts writing as a vital part of independent local journalism. The Independent covers the outermost towns at the tip of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where Provincetown is the cultural capital. These four Outer Cape towns — Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, and Eastham — occupy a fragile environment, much of it protected as part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, and have a combined year-round population of about 15,000, which swells to more than 100,000 in summer. This presents challenges to local and regional governments and to the local economy and community life. At the same time, this is a place that for generations has attracted creative people who contribute to these communities’ continuous renewal. We publish stories for and about the people who live and work here and those who love this place from afar. We believe that high-quality local journalism can bring people closer to their neighbors and to this outermost community. Formal journalism experience is not required to succeed at this job, but you do need to be an excellent writer. You also need enthusiasm for talking with people about what motivates them, curiosity and research skills, and an eye for detail as well as an understanding of the arts — including visual arts, theater, music — and interest in the people who make it. You need to be organized and able to perform under pressure. Note: this job cannot be done remotely. While much work can be done away from the office, the right candidate must be or become part of the local community, including living within easy commuting distance of Provincetown. What you’ll do:• Report, research, write, and, under the guidance of staff editors, revise news and feature articles for the newspaper. Full-time reporters are expected to produce two to four publishable pieces each week.• Develop expertise in the local and regional creative scene, including arts institutions, artists, performers, and makers.• Participate in editorial staff meetings and pitch ideas for stories in both the newspaper and for publication in special issues from time to time.• Work 40 hours a week, on a schedule that might vary and will occasionally require nights and/or weekends.• Collaborate with other reporters and writers as needed.• Assist editors with their work as needed.
